LEADERS FROM GOODWILL RESPOND TO SURVEY FINDINGS
REGARDING HAZARDOUS BABY CRIBS IN THRIFT STORES

Sacramento, CA – The Council of California Goodwill Industries, a collective body of 16 autonomous Goodwill organizations operating throughout the states of California, Nevada, Oregon and Hawaii, supports the efforts of state Senator Jackie Speier and The Danny Foundation for their commitment to raise awareness regarding crib and child product safety

The foundation recently released survey findings that revealed a number of unsafe used cribs sold in thrift stores throughout California.

Dave Nagy, Council Chairman, states, “Our Goodwill organizations work diligently to position themselves as valuable resources in their respective communities.  And we differ fundamentally from most thrift stores.  The safety of our patrons, including infants and children, and the people we serve is a top priority.”

Nagy further explains that Goodwill commits significant attention and resources to adhere strictly with the recall guidelines of the Consumer Products Safety Recall program as well as with manufacturers’ recall notices.

Due to the complexity involved with handling certain products, many Goodwill organizations simply do not accept donations of baby cribs, mesh play yards or child car seats.

However, in light of the reported findings, Nagy indicates that leaders from Goodwill organizations that handle these products are being instructed to re-audit their inventories for cribs and mesh play yards, to immediately remove these items from the sales floors, and to re-inspect all products to ensure full compliance with all safety regulations.

Nagy adds, “Goodwill’s mission is to help people with barriers become self reliant through the power of work.  The proceeds from our thrift retail operations help fund our efforts that focus on workforce development and coaching.  Goodwill promotes the improvement of public heath and safety because we genuinely care about empowering people.”

Goodwill Industries is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing resources to people with disabilities and barriers to employment.
