About Us Promoting self-reliance through the power of work
who we are The Council of California Goodwill Industries is a collective body of 13 autonomous Goodwill organizations operating throughout California and Oregon. what we do We provide education, training and employment services to thousands of residents in our respective communities each year. whom we serve Goodwill Industries strengthens local communities by proudly serving people with various workplace disadvantages and disabilities. how we are funded Our independent operations and workforce development services are funded by our used goods programs, retail thrift operations, recycling endeavors, business outsourcing services, training partnerships with private and public agencies and support from financial contributors. when & why we formed a council The Council was established in 1970 to promote the common goals, purposes and programs of Goodwill Industries. As a collective body, we pool our resources to create synergy, monitor business trends and influence public policy that promotes self reliance through work. The Council also seeks to raise public awareness regarding Goodwillâ’s critical role in workforce development. our history At the turn of the 20th century, a Methodist minister in Boston’s South End pioneered an organization that gave people hope, dignity and independence. Reverend Edgar J. Helms’ original concept was visionary. It is just as relevant today as it was more than 100 years ago.
His social innovation set in motion a worldwide movement that would transform more than 5 million lives over the course of a century – all through the power of work.
Today, Goodwill’s goal is unchanged: to help gain self-sufficiency though work. our vision The next decade offers Goodwill Industries the opportunity to bring its vast knowledge and experience to the workforce development table. We envision the development and implementation of new systems throughout our respective communities to prepare a workforce ready to meet the challenges of the new millennium.
We at Goodwill Industries will be satisfied only when every person has the opportunity to achieve his or her full potential as an individual and to participate and contribute fully in all aspects of a productive life. our mission We seek to enhance the quality and dignity of life for individuals, families and communities through the power of work, the elimination of barriers to opportunity for people with special needs and the facilitation of empowerment. our values
Our founding values are based on the fundamental principle that the goodwill of one person can benefit many and that the goodwill of two or more people can transform our communities, our nation and the world at large. In addition, our values are based on:
our accomplishments Each year, tens of thousands of individuals escape the chains of dependency and poverty with help from Goodwill Industries. These individuals face being shut out of the workforce due to disabilities, language barriers, homelessness, lack of education, illiteracy and/or other disadvantaging conditions. They were referred to Goodwill by social agencies, employment offices, educational institutions, as well as by friends and family members whose lives had been touched by Goodwill.
A sampling of job services offered by Goodwill Industries includes occupational skills training, employment preparation, work experience, career assessment, job placement and other person-centered services that helped our candidates get and keep a job. While services offered vary from one Goodwill affiliate to another, all Goodwills share the goal of helping people transform their lives through employment.
A significant source of employment opportunities exist within Goodwill’s various business operations, including our retail thrift stores. Goodwill Industries is one of the nation’s largest employer of people with disabilities.
We proudly participate in a growing number of private, public and not-for-profit partnerships that leverage $18 million in funding. These partnerships strengthen services and eliminate the duplication of services, resulting in more effective use of tax dollars. These funds represent approximately 10% of the near $180 million in total California Goodwill revenues. |
